Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene:  The mission of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is to protect and promote the health of the public by creating healthy people in healthy communities; to strengthen partnerships between state and local governments, the business community and all health care provides in Maryland; and to build a world class organization grounded in the principles of quality and learning, accountability, cultural sensitivity and efficiency.   The vision of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is to promote healthy people in healthy communities.  The mission of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene touches the life of every citizen of Maryland.  The Department is responsible for seeing that each of us can live a life free from the threat of communicable diseases, tainted foods, and dangerous products.  The Department also regulates health care providers, facilities, and organizations.  In addition, it manages direct services to patients where appropriate.

Washington County Health Department:  Health Department home page.  Services at the Health Department include addictions, community health nursing, mental health, environmental health, WIC.  Below are the main programs of the health department. 

  • Adult Services:   Includes adult evaluation and review, dental, immunizations, and personal care assistance.
  • Children's Health:  Includes dental preventive care, hearing & vision, immunizations, lead poison prevention, Maryland Children's Health (MCHP), school health, children's special medical services, and WIC-Women, Infants & Children.
  • Communicable DiseaseCommunicable disease services include adult immunizations, AIDS case management, HIV testing & counseling, rabies control & vaccine, STD clinic, surveillance & outbreak investigation, and Tuberculosis diagnosis & treatment.
  • Environmental HealthEnvironmental health services include air quality, community services, food protection, on-site water/sewer, permit application, complaints.
  • Substance Abuse & Mental Health:  Includes assessment & referral, drug screens/employee assistance programs, individual, group & family counseling, MVA education, psychiatric evaluations, and 24-hour crisis intervention.
  • Wellness & Health Promotion:  Includescardiovascular risk assessments, community outreach services, diabetes risk and control evaluations, nutrition consultation, preschool nutrition education, Seniors in Motion, and Stop Smoking for Life.
  • Women's Health:  Includes a breast and cervical cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment, colposcopy clinic, family planning clinic, pregnancy testing, and prenatal and postpartum home visits.
