Seniors' Health/Geriatrics

Adult Protective Services:  Department of Social Services, Garrett County:   301-334-9461.  Serves persons over 18 who lack the physical or mental capacity to provide for their daily needs.  The program prevents or remedies neglect, self-neglect, abuse or exploitation of adults and provides professional services to protect the health, safety, and welfare of endangered, vulnerable adults.  In the Program ID box type in 91 and hit submit button.  When the new information appears, click on the Program ID number for information.

Alzheimer's Association, Western Maryland Chapter: The Western Maryland Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association provides services and programs in Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett Counties in Maryland through staff in its corporate office in Frederick and branch office in Hagerstown. The range of Chapter activities includes patient and family caregiver support, provider education and public policy.

Alzheimer's Association Safe Return ProgramPersons at risk of wandering due to a memory disorder are issued a bracelet or necklace engraved with identifying information.  The Association consults with families to try to reduce the likelihood of wandering and provides training for law enforcement officers to assist their rescue and identification efforts.   In the Program ID box type in 481 and hit submit button.  When the new information appears, click on the Program ID number for information.

Area Agency on Aging/Garrett County Community Action AgencyOakland: 301-334-9431. A private non-profit human service and community development agency. GCCAC departments include: Area Agency on Aging, Head Start & Child Care; Housing Services & Community Development, Garrett Transit Service, MicroWORKS; and Community & Emergency Services.   In the Program ID box type in 425 and hit submit button.  When the new information appears, click on the Program ID number for information.

Garrett County Health Department, Adult Evaluation & Review Services:  Adult Evaluation & Review Services (AERS) is a free program for Garrett County residents age 18 and older that helps qualified elderly, chronically ill or disabled persons who receive Maryland Medical Assistance and live in Garrett County to remain in their home by giving help with some simple daily activities.  The program consists of the following programs and services:  AERS, personal care program, Garrett County AIDS Council.

Geriatric Information Web Site (WMAHEC) Western Maryland Area Health Education Center, in cooperation with the University of Maryland Geriatrics and Gerontology Edcuation and Research Program, provides a Web site of geriatric information and resources.

Hospice Network of Maryland:  This website is designed to provide easy access to information about the organization, about hospice care in the State of Maryland and surrounding jurisdictions, and general information about the philosophy of hospice care.

Mountain Glade Adult Day Care:  Provides medical day care at a level between independent living & nursing home care to adults age 16 and up.   In the Program ID box type in 189 and hit submit button.  When the new information appears, click on the Program ID number for information.

Senior Care:  Through the Garrett County Community Action Agency/Area Agency on Aging; provides help to persons 65 and older who are at risk of entering a nursing home to remain safely in the community in their own homes, if they choose to do so.   In the Program ID box type in 72 and hit submit button.  When the new information appears, click on the Program ID number for information.

Senior Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program:  This service through the Maryland Office on Aging provides assistance with Medicare related questions and problems and assists with other senior health insurance issues including long-term care insurance.   In the Program ID box type in 84 and hit submit button.  When the new information appears, click on the Program ID number for information.

Senior Information and Assistance:  Provides a "one-stop center" for information about services and benefits for older persons from the Garrett County Community Action Agency/ Area Agency on Aging.   In the Program ID box type in 72 and hit submit button.  When the new information appears, click on the Program ID number for information.
