General Health Information

Clinical TrialsThe U.S. National Institutes of Health, through its National Library of Medicine, has developed ClinicalTrials.gov to provide patients, family members and members of the public current information about clinical research studies.

Health Sciences and Human Services Library Consumer Health LinksThis University of Maryland library is the Regional Medical Library of the National Library of Medicine and a sponsor of this project.

Health Topics/Diseases

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:  Health Topics A to Z provides a listing of disease and health topics found on the CDC Web site. It is not yet a complete index of the site. New topics are added on an ongoing basis.
  • Karolinska Institute:  This site originates in Sweden and contains a huge number of links on diseaes and conditions.  As these resources have not necessarily been pre-evaluated by librarians, exercise caution when accessing this information.
  • Maryland Disease and Treatments:  Information on diseases and treatments in Maryland compiled by SAILOR, Maryland's Online Public Information Network.
  • MEDLINEplus:   Health Topics (information on conditions, diseases, and wellness plus a medical encyclopedia); Dictionaries; Directories (locations and credentials of doctors, dentists, and hospitals); Other Resources (access to organizations, consumer health libraries, international sites, publications, MEDLINE, and more).

History of MedicineThis resource, from the National Library of Medicine, contains resources for historical scholarship in medicine and related sciences.

Interactive Health Modules:   These tutorials, found at the National Library of Medicine MEDLINEplus site, are interactive health education resources from the Patient Education Institute. Using animated graphics each tutorial explains a procedure or condition in easy-to-read language. You can also listen to the tutorial. NOTE: These tutorials require a special Flash plug-in, version 4 or above. If you do not have Flash, you will be prompted to obtain a free download of the software before you start the tutorial.

National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Southeastern/Atlantic RegionLinks to consumer health information sites as well as information for health professionals and medical librarians.  Western Maryland InfoHealth is funded by a subcontract from the NN/LM SE/A.
