Seniors' Health/Geriatrics Adult Protective Services: Department of Social Services, Allegany County: 301-777-5500. Serves persons over 18 who lack the physical or mental capacity to provide for their daily needs. The program prevents or remedies neglect, self-neglect, abuse or exploitation of adults and provides professional services to protect the health, safety, and welfare of endangered, vulnerable adults. Adult Protective Services & Elderly Abuse Hotline: 1-800-917-7383 Allegany County Area Agency on Aging: 301-777-5970, Ext. 114; acts as an advocate on behalf of all elderly persons in Allegany County agencies and organizations to promote or expand benefits and opportunities for older persons. Allegany County Department of Social Services: 301-777-5500: Assists persons with limited capacities to become self-supporting and self-sufficient. Prevents abuse, neglect, self-neglect, or exploitation of adults; reduces unnecessary institutionalization and secures appropriate institutional care of adults if necessary. Must be 65 years or older and functionally disabled or emotionally impaired. Information and referral without regard to income. Aged adults are eligible for crisis intervention or case management services without regard to income. Allegany County Geriatric Services: Allegany County Health Department Allegany County Health Department Arthritis Foundation - Western MD Branch: Cumberland, 800-750-9078, TTD or TTY, 301-759-9411: Provides information and referrals, and raises funds for programs, educational materials, and information. We offer public forums, educational courses, support groups, and exercise programs. Allegany County Health Department Senior Care Program: Cumberland, 301-777-5665: Provides services to those 65 years of age and older, moderately to several disabled, income/asset eligible. The assistance consists of bathing, dressing, housekeeping, meal preparation, equipment, and purchase of supplies or medications. Hanekamp Street, Lonaconing: 301-463-6215; 33 Main Street, Westernport: 301-359-9930 Allegany County Protective Services: Department of Social Services: 301-784-7068 Alzheimer's Association, Western Maryland Chapter: Provides services and programs in Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett Counties in Maryland through staff in its corporate office in Frederick and branch office in Hagerstown. The range of Chapter activities includes patient and family caregiver suport, provider education, and public policy. Its mission is to support, to educate, to advocate for, and to promote research on behalf of individuals touched by Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Provides ifnormation and referrals and raises funds for programs, educational materials, and information. We offer public forums, educational courses, support groups, and exercise programs. Eldercare Resource Directory: Provided by the University of Maryland Geriatrics and Gerontology Education and Research Program. Geriatric Evaluation Services: Allegany County: 301-777-5600. GES provides assistance to aged and functionally disabled adults whoa re at risk of institutionalization. GES staff conduct a comprehensive evaluation to identify services available to help the individual remain in the community, or in the least restrictive environment. This allows for individual functioning at the highest possible level of independence and personal wellbeing. Geriatric Information Web Site (WMAHEC): Western Maryland Area Health Education Center, in cooperation with the University of Maryland Geriatrics and Gerontology Edcuation and Research Program, provides a Web site of geriatric information and resources. Guardianship & Ombudsman Services: Allegany County: 301-777-5970 Hospice Network of Maryland: This website is designed to provide easy access to information about the organization, about hospice care in the State of Maryland and surrounding jurisdictions, and general information about the philosophy of hospice care. Maryland Office on Aging: 1-800-243-3425 or 1-800-AGE-DIAL. Medicaid: Department of Social Services: 301-784-7000 Senior Connection Program: Click on "Senior Programs" on WMHS Services page. This membership program, sponsored by the Western Maryland Health System, is for people 55 and older who want to stay healthy, active, and involved. Membership entitles you to free and discounted services, including health education programs, health screenings, social activities, and much more. Senior Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program: 301-777-5970. This service through the Maryland Office on Aging provides assistance with Medicare related questions and problems and assists with other senior health insurance issues including long-term care insurance. Senior Legal Assistance: Provides free or low-cost assistance for legal problems regarding abuse, housing health care, health benefits, social services, Social Security benefits, disability benefits, veterans benefits, guardianship, living wills or durable power of attorney for health care. Eligibility determined by county Area Agency on Aging. Allegany County: 301-724-3931. Senior Nutrition Program: Allegany County Health Department: 301-777-8626. This service provides nutritionally well-balanced meals for persons 60 and over and their spouses in a social setting in order to promote physical and social well being. Consumer transports self or uses public transportation. Social Security Office: Cumberland: 301-729-1220; Mon-Fri 7am-7pm 1-800-772-1213 WMHS Adult Medical Day Care: Click on "Adult Medical Day Care" on Western Maryland Health System services page. Western Maryland Health System Adult Medical Day Care provides a home-like atmosphere for adults over the age of 16 who need care during the day. The program gives participants an opportunity to socialize with others. Many participants attend while their family caregivers are at work; others attend so their caregivers can take a break from their daily routine. |
